ISCC PLUS certification

VEKA provides transparency in its material cycle

As a system provider, VEKA pursues the goal of making its value chains as resource-friendly as possible. Now, the company is taking a further step in this direction: with its successful ISCC PLUS certification, VEKA is proving the guarantee of the complete traceability of the materials used at its headquarters in Sendenhorst, Germany - especially with regard to the use of bio-attributed PVC.

GEALAN, the VEKA Group's second profile brand, has also been ISCC PLUS certified since January 2024. This voluntary certification verifies the sustainable origin of bio-based and circular raw materials in the production and supply chains of PVC profiles. All types of biomass, waste and raw materials as well as non-biological renewable energies can be certified under ISCC PLUS.

"VEKA is consistently positioning itself as a system provider that attaches great importance to sustainability and implements corresponding measures in all areas of the company," explains Andreas Hartleif, CEO of VEKA AG. "With the new certificate, we are giving our partners the reassurance that VEKA can precisely track and document the path of the plastic through all stages of profile production. In this way, we are making it clear that we stand for an honest approach to the issue of sustainability. This is crucial when using PVC based on biological raw materials." The Netherlands is one of the first European markets to work with ISCC PLUS. Accordingly, the certificate initially applies to the Dutch profile systems.

What does ISCC PLUS mean?

ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is a globally renowned certification system that was originally developed for the biofuels sector and then expanded to include recycled materials in a wide range of industries. The system is designed in such a way that reliable traceability is ensured when material from various conventional and sustainable sources is used in the manufacturing process. In the certification variant chosen by VEKA, this is based on the mass balance. Put simply, this ensures that the quantity of bio-attributed PVC delivered to Sendenhorst is the same as the quantity that the company sends to its VEKA partners in the form of profiles.

A comprehensive approach to sustainability

"Anyone who chooses a product that is presented as sustainable should be able to rely on this statement," emphasizes Josef L. Beckhoff, the member of the VEKA Management Board responsible for sales and marketing. With the latest certification, VEKA supports window manufacturers in reliably fulfilling the corresponding requirements of building owners. However, the significance of the certificate goes beyond this, continues Josef L. Beckhoff: "In light of the expected developments and documentation requirements in this area, VEKA partners receive valuable support for their own positioning as a sustainable provider of contemporary solutions in the window and door industry."

As a central player in the value chain of windows, processors are now able to obtain certification as well. Together with VEKA's suppliers, who are also certified, the sustainable material cycle of the PVC-U window can thus be fully mapped.
